EASTON — Some of Talbot County’s residents in need will be able to have holiday meals because an unknown person played the lottery in Easton.

A second-tier Powerball ticket worth $1 million was sold at Acme Market located at 210 Marlboro Avenue, for a drawing on Saturday, Aug. 2. An additional $2,500 bonus was awarded to Acme, and the winning does not stop there.

Acme is giving $500 in gift certificates to two local organizations: the Neighborhood Service Center, a community action agency that provides a wide range of services and assistance to individuals, senior citizens and families with low incomes in Talbot County; and the Talbot Interfaith Shelter, a temporary evening and night shelter serving homeless individuals from Talbot County and surrounding areas. These donations are part of the Acme’s Share the Luck initiative.

“We were lucky enough to have a part of this win, so we want to give some of the money back to the community,” Acme’s public affairs manager, Angela Perez, said.

The two organizations were picked to receive the money by Donna Benton, the director of the Easton Acme and Centreville resident.

“Both of these organizations are here to help out the local community and with those in need,” Benton said. “I’m pleased to be able to give back to both of them.”

“No donation is too small, and this one is amazing,” Marilyn Neal, executive director of NSC, said. “We are so happy for this donation.”

Made aware of the donations on Monday, Aug. 4, both NSC and TIS will be honored in a presentation by Acme in the near future.

According to Neal, the money for NSC will go toward supplying food for its annual holiday baskets. Filled with all of the ingredients for a traditional holiday meal, the baskets go to 300 families in need for both Thanksgiving and Christmas meals.

The winner has 182 days from Monday, Aug. 4, to collect the prize.
