Tips & Tricks for a Perfectly Packed Cooler

Pack Your Cooler

During the summer, we put our coolers to good use; whether it’s transporting food to a BBQ or heading out on a camping excursion, your cooler is the best tool for your summer fun.

In order to get the most from your cooler, here are some helpful tips and tricks to make you the cooler packing master in your household!

Don’t Forget To Prep

Trying to find an appropriate surface to chop fruits & veggies on when you’re in the great outdoors is a nightmare.  To save you time, and your sanity, I would highly recommend getting all your produce prepared prior to when you leave.  Or, if you don’t have time to slice & dice, let us do that for you; just take a look at our selection in our Fresh to Go section for all your perfectly prepped produce needs.

There’s a Rhyme & Reason to Order

Like most people, I have usually packed my cooler in the fashion of, “Just throw everything in and make it fit.”  But then, when I arrive at my campsite, I’m having to dig and dig for one particular item that ended up in the bottom.  Instead, pack your cooler in the order in which you intend to use your items.  So, pack the last breakfast first and work your way backward until you have everything you need in there.  No digging.  No unpacking the entire cooler.  Easy peasy.

Containers Are Your Friend

The best way to think of your cooler when packing the layers is a real-life game of tetris.  That game of tetris is made easier when you use containers that can stack on top of each other.  Whether it’s reusable plastic containers or mason jars, find the container that works best for what you’re packing and then start stacking!

Save Ice for Last

Trying to get things to fit after you’ve put in ice is nearly impossible.  Save yourself a headache of trying to jam items into your cooler, and pour the ice on after you’ve packed everything.  The ice cubes will find their way down to the nooks & crannies, doing all the work for you.

Don’t Dump the Water – Save It

Believe it or not, your melted ice is keeping your food cool.  Save it to make sure your food stays fresh and when you’re ready to leave, pour the water on your hot coals.  It’s built-in fire safety!

The night before you pack, put everything in the refrigerator (or freezer if appropriate) so the cooler doesn’t have to work so hard. Don’t open the lid unless you have to. Keep the cooler in the shade and cover with a wet towel.

if you plan a two week trip with out a frig. use dry ice to form you own freezer. Using bottles of water, submerge them into the dry ice, this causes them to refreeze and you can switch them out with thawed ones in you cooler. Also meat can be triple wrapped in freezer paper and kept in the dry ice until needed.

I like to fill ziplock bags with water and freeze days before, they stay solid for days on end!!!! You can make them thin and put 1 on the bottom and 1 on top

If I take water or a sport drinks in a plastic bottle, I freeze them so I have to use less ice for more space, and when they melt we drink them.
