Philadelphia Union Mascot Search

Apr 12th, 2018

The search is on for a mascot for the Philadelphia Union and they need your help!

Over the past few years, parents and kids frequently share great memories they have had with Philadelphia sports teams mascots like the Philly Phanatic, Eagles Swoop and Sixers Franklin. The Union are often asked, “mascots are great for kids and families, why doesn’t the Union have one?”

Given the overwhelming feedback from kids and families, it is time for the Union to bring those same great game day experiences to Union fans.  Not only are the Union taking action from fan feedback, they’re actually letting kids drive the design of what will be the Union mascot in the future.  Kids will be able to submit their designs in numerous ways: At participating Acme stores, social media (with mom and dad’s help of course), Union’s website, and at select local elementary schools. Once all of the submissions are received, they will be inviting kids to vote for the finalists.  With all of the interaction and feedback from kids along the way, the new mascot is truly “From Kids, to U.”

If you’re more of a “hard facts” kind of person, here are some notes:

  • Mascot concepts will be submitted and voted on by kids
  • The Union and the original Philly Phanatic, David Raymond, will optimize the final designs for a mascot suit company to create
  • Who else has a mascot?  Pretty much all pro/college teams in Philadelphia, 20/20 Premier League teams and 15/23 MLS teams

The Union are excited to launch this kid-driven initiative and look forward to seeing all of the great concepts from our young fans.

Please select & consider gender inclusive mascots. Very few mascots representing public, private, college, university, semi-pro and professional sports have female mascots complimenting male driven-mascot dominance. I’m a former cheerleader at Bowling Green State University proud to be represented equally by Freddie and Frieda Falcon. Phillie Phanatic rendition of a drag mom, girlfriend, et aliae representation is hysterical, yet not representative of 50% of America’s population.
Researching “Gender Inclusive Collegiate Mascots of from 605 College & University list: preliminary count via eyeball scan found ONLY 24 co-ed pairings… In #METOO era, this is appalling. Bravo LA Rams for selecting the first two male cheerleaders in 2018, forty-seven years after being Urbana, OH High School’s first male cheerleader. I’m proud mom was the first female drum-major three decades prior at UHS; two pioneering gender benders.

SIDEBAR: In 2003 I created a “Drag with a Tag” character Miss Altered States, David Raymond, Tom Burgoyne, et al, et aliae, et alii I applaud y’all and in no way demean your talent, drag tease and national treasure status! I’m confident progressive thoughtful kids will make representative, meaningful, purposeful and PHANTASTIC CHOICES! Cheers, Miss Altered Cheer States initially born M.A.D. (215) 627-0424 since 1990.
